Starting from scratch

Starting tomorrow, our diet totally changes. It’s the BIG DAY! I cleaned out the rest of the pantry tonight, bagging up all the odds and ends and the baking cupboard. No more chocolate chips, no flour, raisins, cream soups- organic or not. I started bagging up the freezer foods, but that is trickier since I really need to empty it all and sort little by little and then return it to the freezer for Anja (a freecycler and single mom of 3 boys) to come pick it up before it melts and spoils. I am having to train my brain as I go, or re-train, to not recognize wheat as a food, just like I have done with beef that is not grass-fed (Wendy’s doesn’t make my mouth water anymore!) and artificial colors (I get queasy looking at decorated cakes, even.) Still, while meal-planning, it was hard to imagine a hamburger without a bun or a soup without a hunk of bread, breakfast without toast, lunch without sandwiches…

But we did. DH and I sat for approx 2 hours tonight and meal-planned almost 4 weeks of dinners tonight, and one week of lunches, and it’s all pretty much “normal” stuff that everyone eats. You know, soup, chili, tacos, roasts, chicken… those kinds of things. Meat and potatoes, but with less potatoes and more, varied, vegetables. I’m hopeful as I look at our sprawling list of foods we planned to have, and our even longer list of things we can have that we haven’t even planned for yet!
